SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

The Wounds of Christ Give Us Life

April 27, 2025

AS WE GATHER: “For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood” (1 John 5:7). These three point to Christ and flow from Christ. Jesus shows His disciples His hands side, from which blood and water flowed, saying “Peace be with you.” He presents the wounds which turn our fear to gladness and which restore us to the Father.  Jesus breathes on His disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:23).  His breath, His words are Spirit and life.  They raise up our dry, dead bones and give us new and everlasting life (Ezek. 37:1-14). Christ now gives His ministers to speak His forgiving, Spirit-filled words to the penitent in His stead.  Our Lord continues to come to His people, presenting His wounds to us in the Sacraments of water and blood. He bids us to touch His side at His table, to receive His risen body and blood in true faith, that believing we may have life in His name.

We receive in faith His counsel that Christ’s very body and blood are present under the bread and wine for our forgiveness.  As we receive Holy Communion today, the whole counsel of God moves us to determine confessional oneness for those who receive the sacrament together.  Out of care for souls and a common confession, we ask that if you do not belong to a Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod congregation or any congregation in altar pulpit fellowship with her, and you choose to approach the table, cross your arms to receive a blessing..

Sermon

Offertory           Chancel Choir  “Touch That Soothes and Heals”

Touch That Soothes and Heals

(These are the words to the hymn that the Chancel Choir is singing today,

you can read them as the choir sings)

Touch that soothes and heals the hurting, Hands that break a loaf of bread;

Steps that walk beside the weary, Bearing burdens in their stead;

Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit ones in need of care,

Give the homeless warmth and shelter: Christ will find a welcome there.

“See My hands and feet,” said Jesus, love arisen from the grave.

“Be my hands and feet,” said Jesus, “Live as ones I died to save.”

Love and serve without distinction all earth’s people, first and least.

Know within each act of kindness hope and wholeness are increased.

 “See My hands and feet,” said Jesus, love arisen from the grave.

“Be my hands and feet,” said Jesus, “Live as ones I died to save.”

Hands that beckon little children, bind a wound, prepare a meal,

Feet that rush to share good tidings, Christ arisen, still reveal.

“See My hands and feet,” said Jesus, love arisen from the grave.

“Be my hands and feet,” said Jesus, “Live as ones I died to save.”

*Prayer of the Church

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

O God, our Father, You have raised Your Son, and He has bestowed the Holy Spirit on His apostles. Believing Christ’s resurrection, help us also to trust the forgiving words of His servants. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord, You sent Your Spirit upon Your people of old and brought them back from exile. Breathe on Your Church again to renew our faith and fellowship, that we may stand as Your holy army and have hope. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Merciful God, remember those who have wandered from the household of faith. Faithful to Your promises, work all things in their lives to remind them of their need for Your unending grace and steadfast love, that they might return to the faith and delight in Your Son, crucified and raised for them. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly King, You promise that the faith of Your people will overcome the world. Let it be so! By the testimony of the Word and Sacrament, overcome the powers of this world. Turn its evil to good, and enliven many to follow Christ in faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, we praise Your Son’s resurrection from the dead and draw strength from His ascension before You, where He ever stands for us as our own High Priest. Graciously receive our prayers of intercession and hear them for Christ’s sake. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Father, Your Son greets His disciples with peace despite their sins against Him. Make us confident in His mercy toward us, and gladden our hearts as He comes to us in His body and blood with forgiveness and renewal. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank You that out of Your indescribable grace, for the sake of Your Son, You have given us the Holy Gospel and instituted the blessed Sacraments, that through them we may have comfort and the forgiveness of sin. Grant us Your Holy Spirit, that we may heartily believe Your Word, and through the Holy Sacraments establish our faith day by day, until at last we obtain eternal salvation; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
